Milwaukee-based HK Systems, Inc., an automated material handling and supply chain software total solutions provider, has been selected to provide a new, state-of-the- art, Automated Storage & Retrieval System (ASRS) for H.E. Butt Grocery Co. in San Antonio, Texas. The unique system is designed to automatically store pallets of frozen goods and retrieve products for full pallet delivery, as well as pick-face replenishment, according to a press release from HK Systems.

The ASRS is designed around the HK4000 Storage & Retrieval Machines (SRM), and is configured to store pallets in a triple-deep configuration. This design allows for in-rack pick tunnels, while utilizing the space above the tunnels for pallet storage, thus providing balance between picking efficiency, storage density, and rack utilization. HK Systems’ Equipment Management System (EMS) controls the activities of the SRM’s and the front-end pallet conveyor systems, automatically handling product put-away, full pallet retrieval, and pick-face replenishment based on daily order fulfillment requirements.

In addition to supplying the automated equipment, HK Systems is also performing the general construction services for the new facility. When completed, the facility will occupy approximately 70,500-sq. ft. (plus a 9,000-sq. ft. mezzanine) and will stand nearly 120’ tall at its highest point with an operating temperature of -20° F.
