Giant Food Stores has promoted Ron Bagley to director of compact formats, a newly created position, according to company.

Bagley will be involved with Giant’s own turn on the small store trend, one that has produced Walmart’s Marketside concept and Tesco’s Fresh & Easy. In April, Giant opened its first convenience store, Giant To Go, a 4,400 square foot store, located in Lancaster, Pa. It combines typical convenience store assortment and services with an expanded food presentation including produce, meats, deli and bakery. Purchases there tie into the company’s loyalty card program.

Yet, Giant spokesperson Tracy Pawelski said Giant To Go isn’t all that the company has in the works. It is developing multiple additional concepts involving both new stores and existing supermarkets slated for renovation. “Giant has been looking at how to work with new formats to expand and broaden our company’s geographic reach,” she said.

Bagley, whose most recent position was director of operations, merchandising, will report to Steve Lamontagne, vp of format development.

Giant Food Stores also has promoted of Joe LaCagnina to director of real estate. LaCagnina most recently served as a real estate representative and, in his new role, will identify, secure and facilitate new store locations, fuel facilities, store expansions and relocations. He will report to Bill Shrader, vp of real estate.
