According to
Crain’s New York Business, Aldi is hiring management staff for its first New York City store, to be open in the borough of Queens.
The discount oriented food and general merchandise retailer – with operations skewing toward edibles and consumables – would enter a community that is underserved by supermarkets and discount stores. A&P and Ahold USA are the only major supermarket chains operating in the borough, where Kmart has pulled back to one location and Target has only two stores, all to serve a population of 2.3 million mostly middle class consumers.
Trader Joe’s, which is owned by a separate division of German parent Aldi, also operates in the borough.
