Wegmans is running a back to school preview Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help shoppers at its 73 stores cope with preparing kids for the transition from vacation to education, with events to include a smoothie bar featuring concocted frozen fruit and private label yogurt.
Wegmans tapped the moms and dads working for the company to come up with ideas that eventually made up its back to school celebration. So on Aug. 29, a date set close to school return but without impinging on Labor Day weekend plans, Wegmans shoppers can sample smoothies as well as learn about feature meals the supermarket chain has introduced, all of which can be prepared for under $5 a serving. In other facets of the event, deli and cheese department customers can learn about fresh ways to introduce long-time and new favorite choices into a range of breakfast, lunch and dinner options.
Wegman’s is making nutrition an important part of the event and, so, is getting involved in education itself, offering ideas to help consumers shift to better eating. Among the suggestions, introducing healthy appetizers before dinner, including hummus and crackers, to provide “a healthier balance between the foods that make up your meal, and it’s better for the waistline, too,” said Trish Kazacos, the company’s nutritionist.
