But units are off for both in supermarkets in recent 12 weeks, IRI says.
Frozens Gain 2.5%
Frozen foods rose by 2.5% to reach $7.450 billion in supermarkets for the 12 weeks ended March 22, according to Information Resources, Inc., the Chicago-based market research firm. Units slipped by 2.4% to 10.594 billion.
Here’s a look at the performance of the largest sub-categories: single-serve frozen dinners/entrees, down 2.7% to $892.4 million, units down 5.4% to 412.0 million; ice cream, up 0.6% to $823.6 million, units up 2.4% to 243.5 million; pizza, up 6.4% to $743.6 million, units up 1.9% to 248.4 million; novelties, down 0.5% to $432.9 million, units up 0.2% to 135.6 million; processed chicken, up 1.2% to $388.6 million, units down 0.8% to 78.0 million; handheld non-breakfast entrees, down 0.4% to $323.2 million, units down 3.3% to 143.8 million; multi-serve dinners/entrees, up 3.8% to $308.8 million, units down 0.7% to 55.8 million; IQF chicken, up 10.5% to $283.1 million, units up 10.7% to 45.2 million; appetizers/snacks, up 7.7% to $257.7 million, units down 1.3% to 71.4 million; plain potatoes/fries/hash browns, up 6.6% to $246.3 million, units down 3.3% to 91.0 million; meat (no poultry), up 10.6% to $173,614,576, units up 2.3% to 29,951,104; mixed vegetables, down 2.3% to $151,656,736, units off 7.2% to 84,799,736.
Dairy Foods Drop 2.9%
Dairy foods dropped 2.9% to $11.369 billion in the 12 weeks ended March 22, according to IRI. The decrease came as commodity prices began returning to more normal levels after spiking in 2008. Units were off by 0.6% to 4.856 billion.
