Corn Dogs Index 268 in Big Households

They’re the highest-indexing category. Frozen apple, grape juice come in second and third.

Everyone wants big families shopping their stores for obvious reasons, so we thought we’d see which categories in frozen and dairy foods have the highest indexes for households with five or more members. According to Nielsen Homescan Consumer Facts, covering prepackaged UPC-coded products, corn dogs top the list.

We had our own preconceived notions about buyers of corn dogs, and for the most part, when we checked the Homescan data, we learned we were right. But there were a few surprises. It’s probably no surprise to anybody that heaviest use is in D counties in the West and South, and that corn dog users tend to be blue collar — with that segment indexing 151 and accounting for 38% of total sales.

Hispanics indexed 129, making up 13% of sales. Households with incomes above $100,000 indexed only 72, but also accounted for 13% of sales. These products generally skew to young, rural families. But even though Cosmopolitan Centers index at 63, they have enough mass to make up 9% of all corn dog sales.
